- Of course, without the right backing music it could be a prog-rock pampered menial, but what we have here is a frenetic quasi-classical vibe virtuoso flourishes of piano, pampered menial, violin, mellotron and guitar combined with very decent rock Julia, Late November, Natchez Trace and mind-bending mini-suites Of Once and Future Kings.
Of course his voice is not naturally gifted but the guy transmits different feelings and moods, something very important for a good vocalist. The drums and Guitar by Mick Safron and Steve Scorfina are not spectacular but very much over the average. Through all the song each member adds something extra including flute and correct drumming, an excellent way to start a very good album. Not a masterpiece but can be listened. They missed the shot. The LP was soon reissued by Columbia Pampered menialwhose version with slightly different cover entered the charts in mid-June, just after the ABC issue had dropped off the charts. While it's most certainly of its time, there is still something incredibly strange and perversely compelling about David Surkamp's vocals — at times his high vibrato is closer to a banshee's wail than anything else.
